(October 17, 2025)—More than 200 junior athletes were extended an invitation to try out for one of three teams that will represent the United States next summer at the 2026 WFDF World Junior Ultimate Championships in Logroño, Spain.

After reviewing more than 460 applications, the U.S. National Team coaching staff selected a total of 216 players to participate in one of two tryouts – a west tryout in Dublin, Calif., November 8-9 and an east tryout in Charlotte, N.C., November 22-23.

Following the tryouts, coaches will select a total of 72 players – 24 each to the mixed, open or women’s squads.

The open and women’s teams will again be led by head coaches Reid Koss and Deanna Ball, both of whom have been at the helm of their respective teams since 2018. Koss led the open team to gold medals in the last three editions of the tournament (2018, ’22, ’24), while Ball guided the women’s team to a pair of world titles in 2018 and 2022 and a silver medal in 2024.

Martin Aguilera returns to the sidelines as head coach of the mixed team after leading his squad to a world championship last summer. It was the first iteration of the mixed division at the tournament since it began in 1988.

On the open team, Koss will be joined by assistant coaches Andy Nielsen and Stan Birdsong and selection coach Christie Lawry.

Tulsa Douglas and AnnaMaria Pape will join Ball as assistant coaches of the women’s team along with selection coach Judy Jarvis.

In the mixed division, Aguilera will run it back with assistant coaches Clarie Revere and Ken Porter with Alexia McCaskill returning as a selection coach along with Ari Lozano.

Team USA Roster for 2025 World Games Announced https://usaultimate.org/news/2025/03/team-usa-roster-for-2025-world-games-announced/ Wed, 12 Mar 2025 18:59:08 +0000 https://usaultimate.org/?p=28278 Colorado Springs, Colo. (March 12, 2024)—USA Ultimate, the national governing body for the sport of ultimate in the United States and member of the U.S. Olympic & Paralympic Committee, announced today the roster for the U.S. National Team that will represent the United States at the 2025 World Games.

Following a pair of tryouts that hosted 78 of the nation’s top ultimate players from around the country, Team USA coaches settled on a final roster of 20 athletes, including six alternates, that will prepare and train for the world’s most prestigious ultimate competition. As a mixed-gender sport, Team USA’s roster is evenly split between men and women.

With a substantial presence of veteran players, this year’s squad features nine athletes with ties to previous World Games rosters, including four players who have represented the United States at the past two editions.

Carolyn Finney (Oakland, Calif.), Dylan Freechild (Portland, Ore.), Chris Kocher (Brooklyn, N.Y.) and Grant Lindsley (Ogden, Utah) return for their third trip to the World Games after previously playing for Team USA at the 2017 and 2022 events. They are joined by fellow returnees Claire Chastain (Denver, Colo.), who played at the 2022 World Games and served as an alternate on the 2017 team, as well as Kaela Helton (Coronado, Calif.) and Claire Trop (Washington, D.C.), who competed in the 2022 edition.

Kami Groom (Durham, N.C.) and Raphy Hayes (Portland, Ore.) are also included on the 14-person roster that will travel to Chengdu, China this summer. Groom has twice served as an alternate (2017, ’22) and Hayes was a replacement player in 2022.

The balance of the roster that will make the trip overseas includes first-time World Games participants Marques Brownlee (Closter, N.J.), Dawn Culton (Chapel Hill, N.C.), Henry Ing (Portland, Ore.), Michael Ing (San Francisco, Calif.) and Anna Thompson (San Francisco, Calif.).

Coaches also named six alternates who will travel with the team to various training camps leading up to the World Games, as well as an early-season prep tournament, the London Invite. Those players include: Christian Boxley (Washington, D.C.), Brett Hulsmeyer (Madison, Ala.), Kirstin Johnson (Oakland, Calif.), Jonny Malks (Arlington, Va.), Lindsay McKenna (Malvern, Pa.) and Olivia Player (Cambridge, Mass.).

Most recently, 16 of the 20 athletes named to the World Games team represented Team USA at the 2024 WFDF World Ultimate Championships in Brisbane, Australia, where the open, mixed and women’s teams all won world titles.

“I appreciate the time, effort and preparation by all the athletes involved in this process,” said head coach Matty Tsang, who returns to the sidelines for his fourth World Games. “The competition was high at these tryouts, and so was the camaraderie and commitment to building a team that we can all be proud of. The collective work by the athletes in the tryout pool set a great foundation for these 20 athletes to build upon in preparation for China.”

Occurring every four years, the World Games is an international, multisport event that features sports and disciplines that are not included on the Olympic program. They are managed by the International World Games Association (IWGA) and operate under the patronage of the International Olympic Committee (IOC).

This year’s iteration will be the 12th edition since the inaugural event in 1981. Ultimate was added to the World Games program in 2001 and the United States has won the gold medal in each of the last five editions (2022, ’17, ’13, ’09, ’05), recording a record of 25-3 during that span.

The 2025 World Games take place from August 7-17 with the sport of ultimate scheduled for August 12-16. Competing countries include the host nation, China, as well as six other qualifiers: Australia, Canada, Colombia, France, Germany and Japan.

Team USA will be led by head coach Matty Tsang and assistants Miranda Knowles and Nancy Sun.

Following an initial tryout that welcomed 78 players from around the country, Team USA coaches made their first round of cuts, inviting a pool of players back to San Antonio, Texas for another shot at making the 14-person team that will compete in Chengdu, China in August.

Occurring every four years, the World Games is an international, multi-sport event that includes the most competitive and highest profile ultimate tournament in the world. Ultimate competes as a mixed-gender sport and will include a field of eight teams: Australia, Canada, China, Colombia, France, Germany, Japan and the United States.

The 2025 World Games takes place August 7-17, with the ultimate tournament scheduled for August 12-16.

Team USA will enter the World Games as five-time defending champions, having won gold at every edition since 2005. Overall, Team USA has a 30-5 record at the World Games, including five titles and a second-place finish in 2001.

Of the 34 players invited to the second tryout, 10 were on the squad that competed at the 2022 World Games in Birmingham, Ala. – Claire Chastain, Khalif El-Salaam, Carolyn Finney, Dylan Freechild, Kaela Helton, Chris Kocher, Grant Lindsley, Sarah Meckstroth, Carolyn Normile and Claire Trop.

Finney, Freechild, Lindsley and Kocher are all vying for their third trip to the World Games after also representing Team USA at the 2017 edition in Wroclaw, Poland.

Head coach Matty Tsang returns to the team as head coach and is supported by assistants Miranda Knowles and Nancy Sun and selection assistant Carlos Lopez.

U-24 National Team Selected for 2025 Worlds https://usaultimate.org/news/2024/12/u-24-national-team-selected-for-2025-worlds/ Tue, 10 Dec 2024 22:13:26 +0000 https://usaultimate.org/?p=27380 Colorado Springs, Colo. (December 10, 2024)—Seventy-two players were named to the U-24 U.S. National Team in advance of next year’s WFDF World U-24 Ultimate Championships in Spain, USA Ultimate announced today.

Athletes were chosen by Team USA coaching staff following a pair of tryouts last month and offered a spot on one of the delegation’s three rosters: mixed, open or women’s. Each roster will feature 24 of the nation’s best college-aged players as they look to replicate a successful 2023 campaign that ended with a collective 27-0 record and a trio of gold medals.

All totaled, more than 600 players applied for consideration with just over 200 invited to tryouts before final selections were made. Rosters for the age-restricted teams include just 12 holdovers from last year’s U-24 teams, plus eight athletes that competed for Team USA at the World Junior Ultimate Championships earlier this year.

Held every two years, the U-24 World Championships are scheduled to take place June 21-28 in Logroño, Spain. Since the event’s inception in 2013, the U.S. has compiled a 148-1 record, winning 14 of the 15 available gold medals.

(December 5, 2024)—USA Ultimate announced today the 54 athletes that have been selected to represent the United States in the three elite divisions at the 2025 WFDF World Beach Ultimate Championships.

The three initial 18-player rosters for the mixed, open and women’s division teams were chosen by U.S. National Team coaches following a pair tryouts last month. All totaled, 180 players took to the sand to compete for a spot on Team USA after more than 1,000 players applied for consideration.

Of the 54 players selected, more than half are returning from the 2023 delegation that won a pair of world titles in the open and women’s divisions and a bronze medal in the mixed division. The open team features 11 returnees, while the mixed and women’s squads each return eight players.

Occurring every two years, the 2025 edition will take place next November in the Algarve region of Portugal.

Additional U.S. National Team rosters for any applicable masters divisions will later be announced by USA Ultimate.

USA Ultimate Invites 212 to U-24 National Team Tryouts https://usaultimate.org/news/2024/10/usa-ultimate-invites-212-to-u-24-national-team-tryouts/ Thu, 03 Oct 2024 18:43:29 +0000 https://usaultimate.org/?p=26833 Colorado Springs, Colo. (October 3, 2024)—USA Ultimate announced today the 212 athletes who were invited to participate in tryouts for the U.S. National Team that will represent the United States at the 2025 WFDF World U-24 Championships next summer in Logroño, Spain.

Following an initial application process that saw nearly 600 players express interest, Team USA coaching staff pared the pool down to a final list of invitees that will attend one of two tryouts next month.

Following tryouts, coaches will select a final roster of 72 players – three teams of 24 that will compete in the mixed, open and women’s divisions.

Next month’s tryouts mark the first step towards defending gold medals in each of the three divisions as Team USA swept the top step of the podium last year in the U.K.

Full Team USA Coaching Staff for U-24, Beach Worlds Confirmed https://usaultimate.org/news/2024/10/full-team-usa-coaching-staff-for-u-24-beach-worlds-confirmed/ Thu, 03 Oct 2024 14:46:12 +0000 https://usaultimate.org/?p=26846 Colorado Springs, Colo. (October 2, 2024)—With 2025 shaping up to be a busy year for the U.S. National Team, USA Ultimate announced today 16 additions to the Team USA coaching staff, including nine assistant coaches and seven selection assistants that will help evaluate, select and prepare athletes for a pair of major international events next year.

For the U-24 National Team set to compete in Spain next summer, the Team USA coaching staff will look much like it did a year ago when the U.S. brought home three gold medals from the 2023 World Championships in the U.K. Of the six assistant coaches that helped guide all three teams to world titles, five will return, including Hanna Baranes and Lauren Boyle (mixed), David Allison and Darryl Stanley (open) and Sarah Griffith (women). Robin Davis, a relative newcomer to the National Team program, is a first-time assistant coach for the women’s team and previously served as a selection assistant for the team that was set to represent the U.S. at the 2020 World Ultimate Championships before the tournament was cancelled.

The six U-24 assistants will serve alongside previously announced head coaches Patrick Sherlock (mixed), Bob Krier (open) and Gwen Ambler (women).

Joining these coaches in support of the U-24 program are four selection assistants as Carlos Lopez returns to the mixed team and is joined by Tracey Lo. Sam Lehman and Claire Revere complete the Team USA staff as selection assistants for the open and women’s teams respectively.

Next fall, the U.S. National Team will also compete at the World Beach Ultimate Championships, and the coaching staff supporting the head coaches has also been determined.

Joining head coach Eileen Murray in leading the mixed squad is assistant coach Manisha Daryani and selection assistants Judy Jarvis and Ken Porter.

Mario O’Brien joins head coach Bryan Jones as an assistant for the open team with Tyler Kinley returning to the program as a selection assistant after helping lead Team USA to a gold medal as an assistant last year.

After also winning a world title last year, the women’s team will look familiar with assistant coach Sean McCall returning to head coach Samantha Broaddus’ staff. They will be joined by selection assistant Andrea DeSabato.

Tryouts for both the U-24 and Beach National Teams occur next month.

The 2025 U-24 World Championships take place June 21-28 in Logroño, Spain, while the Beach World Championships will occur November 2-8 in the Algarve region of Portugal.
